It’s okay to be broken

I remember a day when I was eight years old playing soccer in my grandma’s backyard with a neighborhood friend.  We were pretty competitive back then, and when I had the opportunity to score a goal, I let one fly off my dominant right foot.  The problem is that I wasn’t a skilled soccer player, and that shot decided to open up the basement by putting a hole in the window.  Kssshhh, and as any young kid would do, I ran!

There is something inside of all of us that innately knows something is wrong whenever something breaks.  It’s in our nature to conceal what’s been broken or to simply run away from it, as I did that day.  It’s not in our nature to face it head on, and this has been the case since the very beginning when God created Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.  If you remember, God gave them a simple rule to follow: eat from every tree in the garden but one.  As is often the case with us, that one tree possibly became their obsession, their curiosity, and when the serpent persuaded them to disregard God’s command, they were primed to disobey and eat from this one tree.

What follows is what’s common to man, the idea of covering up and running away, as Adam and Eve chose to cover their bodies with fig leaves and hide in the Garden.  Their reaction to brokenness is the same as ours, in that it is difficult for us to admit when something is broken, namely us.

The truth is, there is only one cure for brokenness, and that is confession and repentence.  When we proactively admit that we are broken, that we are desperately in need of help and truly sorry for the hurt we have caused, that’s when God does His greatest work.  As the Bible says in the book of James, “…confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.”  (James 5:16 ESV)

It’s okay to be broken.  We all are.  The miracle happens when we have the courage to confess our brokenness to the ones closest to us, the ones who love us and will pray for us so that God will begin the healing process in our lives.

Are you ready to be healed?  I encourage you to take the uncomfortable step of sharing the depths of your brokenness with those who love you and will pray for you.  And do it today, for this is the only day we’ve been promised.
